Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Douglas Costa has confirmed that Chelsea were interested in him about a potential January move during the January transfer window.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was reportedly keen to secure the services of the Brazilian international to the west London club but the Premier League club eventually signed Colombian star Juan Cuadrado from Fiorentina.
Costa told Goal.com: “Yes, I had a contact [with Chelsea] and the chance to work with a coach like Jose Mourinho always motivates a player. I am very grateful for the kindness he showed with me.
“He is a very smart coach and who won [titles] wherever he has gone.”
Shakhtar are believed to have demanded £21.5m for the 24-year-old midfielder, who has scored once in seven Champions League appearances for the club so far this season.
Costa has scored 35 goals in 184 appearances in all competition since joining the Ukrainian outfit from Gremio in 2010.
