Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a January move for Mainz forward Yoshinori Muto, according to reports from The Mirror.
The Red Devils have been monitoring the 23-year-old Japanese striker for sometime, and now they are planning to make a formal approach for him next month.
Muto joined the Bundesliga outfit Mainz from FC Tokyo in May and his current contract at the German Club is valid until 2019. He scored seven goals in 14 appearances for so far this season.
The report claims that United boss Louis van Gaal is desperate for a world class striker this January as his side have struggled for goals this season, scoring only 22 goals in 17 league games and the Dutchman knows he needs to reinforce his attacking options.
Van Gaal currently has only two established attackers in the form of Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial. Bringing a top level strike force to Old Trafford can be difficult, therefore the Premier League giants will look for cheaper alternatives in the January transfer window before making a big move next summer.
