Man Utd Make Contact for River Plate Goalkeeper Santiago Beltran

Manchester United have reportedly made their first approach for River Plate goalkeeper Santiago Beltran, with Inter Milan also monitoring the 21-year-old Argentine. The claim comes from ESPN Argentina reporter Gustavo Yarroch.

Why Man Utd Want Goalkeeper Competition

United brought in Karl Darlow on a free transfer from Leeds United during the summer, but the Welshman’s Carabao Cup debut against Brighton did little to inspire confidence. The Red Devils may therefore want stronger competition for Senne Lammens, the undisputed league starter since his debut last year.

Santiago Beltran’s Contract and Form

Beltran’s deal at River Plate runs until December next year, and the club are currently negotiating an extension. Even so, a move to Europe is widely expected, with Inter also keen. The youngster broke through in 2026 and has already made 39 appearances in all competitions. He boasts a 70 per cent save rate in Argentina’s top flight, completes 70 per cent of his passes and is praised for his reflexes, handling and command of his box at set-pieces.

Darlow and Heaton’s Futures

Darlow is nearly 36 and could slip to third choice next season if another goalkeeper arrives. Meanwhile, Tom Heaton has signed a one-year extension, although he is likely to end his United career at the end of the season to take up a coaching role at the club.

Our Opinion on the Move

In our view, this looks like a sensible piece of business. Beltran is young, statistically impressive and his expiring contract could work in United’s favour. At 21, he also offers resale value and a long-term succession plan for the position. Lammens still lacks a proper challenger, particularly given his struggles with long-range shots, and Darlow’s shaky debut suggests he is a stopgap rather than a solution. Inter’s interest could complicate matters, though, so United will need to move quickly.
