Chelsea are lining up a permanent departure for Robert Sanchez next summer, even though the Spaniard is presently out on loan at Como.

Sanchez left Stamford Bridge in the closing stages of the transfer window following a torrid start to the 2026/27 campaign that saw him slip well down the goalkeeping pecking order. Notably, his loan switch to the Italian side carries no obligation-to-buy clause, which technically leaves the door open for a return to west London come the end of the season. That said, the Daily Mail reports Chelsea’s preference is firmly geared towards offloading him for good.

Signed from Brighton for £25 million back in August 2023, Sanchez has racked up 112 outings for Chelsea, featuring in sides that won both the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Despite that trophy haul, his form between the sticks in the Premier League tailed off sharply, prompting the temporary move to Serie A.

Chelsea have since moved on, bringing in Emiliano Martinez on a three-year deal with a further option year, while continuing to back highly rated 21-year-old Mike Penders for greater minutes. With that pairing now central to Enzo Maresca’s plans, it’s hard to see a route back for Sanchez.

The move to Lombardy gives Sanchez a genuine chance to rediscover his best form outside the Stamford Bridge spotlight, and he’s already made his first league start for the club against Parma. Cesc Fabregas has spoken positively about the healthy competition he now has for the No.1 shirt, praising Sanchez’s top-level pedigree.

Personally, I think this works both ways — Sanchez gets regular football to rebuild his stock, and Chelsea finally get clarity in a goalkeeping department that desperately needed it. A strong season in Italy could set up a tidy summer sale for all parties involved.
