Liverpool Hold Off on Virgil van Dijk Contract Extension as Real Madrid Circle

Liverpool are in no hurry to open contract talks with Virgil van Dijk, with the captain’s form over the rest of the season set to dictate any new agreement at Anfield, according to Football Insider.

Why Liverpool are waiting on Van Dijk

The Dutchman is in the final year of his current deal and will be able to leave as a free agent next summer. Even at 35, he continues to perform at an elite level, and he will turn 36 before the 2027/28 campaign gets under way.

He recently won his 100th cap for the Netherlands and shows no sign of slowing down. For Liverpool, he has clocked up 380 appearances in all competitions since arriving from Southampton.

Real Madrid and Juventus monitoring Van Dijk

Juventus reportedly sent scouts to watch him during the current international break, while Real Madrid are said to be keen ahead of next summer, when he could be available without a fee.

The prospect of a move to the Bernabéu could be tempting, though Van Dijk may still favour Liverpool if the club show a genuine desire to keep him.

Will Liverpool extend Van Dijk’s contract?

Liverpool are expected to wait until the end of the campaign before deciding. That is familiar territory, as the club waited until summer before agreeing his 2025 extension.

Our view on the Van Dijk situation

In our opinion, patience is a sensible approach, but it is not risk-free. Letting a player of Van Dijk’s stature approach free agency hands Real Madrid a powerful negotiating position.

A shorter, performance-related deal feels like the logical middle ground, rewarding his consistency without tying Liverpool to an ageing defender for too long. Losing their captain for nothing would be a blow, though, and Anfield officials will know it.
