Liverpool Eye Jules Kounde as January Right-Back Option
Liverpool are weighing up a January move for Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, according to Football Insider, as concerns grow over their right-back options.
Why Liverpool Need a Right-Back
Jeremie Frimpong has struggled to make a consistent impact since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen. After starting the first two Premier League games under Andoni Iraola, he has since slipped to the bench, with the Reds keeping three straight clean sheets before the international break.
Conor Bradley’s injury problems have limited alternatives further. Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes the club recognise the position needs reinforcing, with Frimpong’s defensive work a particular worry. Liverpool considered a summer move but held back, and January may change that, though other areas could take priority.
Kounde’s Barcelona Situation
The 27-year-old has recently fallen outside Hansi Flick’s preferred XI. Equally comfortable at right-back or in central defence, he offers the versatility Liverpool want.
Barcelona have no plans to sell, but reports suggest an offer above £60 million could test their resolve.
Our Take on Liverpool’s Right-Back Search
Kounde makes more sense than another attack-minded full-back. Frimpong brings pace and flair, but Liverpool must consider what happens when possession is lost. A steadier, experienced figure could add balance and also provide cover in central defence if injuries strike.
The fee is the sticking point. Spending £60 million-plus on a 27-year-old sits awkwardly with Liverpool’s recent preference for younger talent, and Barcelona’s reluctance adds another hurdle.
Still, if Frimpong’s form does not improve and Bradley’s fitness stays uncertain, right-back could become a pressing issue. Kounde may be an ambitious target, but he is exactly the sort of proven performer who could settle the position.
