Man Utd plot summer swoop for Brighton’s Baleba

Manchester United are targeting Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba as their primary candidate to replace the departing Casemiro this summer, according to Caught Offside.

The Brazilian veteran’s exit is confirmed, with his contract expiring on June 30. Despite finding some form in recent months — chipping in with several key goals — United have made a firm decision to move on and won’t be reversing course.

A Bargain in the Making?

Here’s where it gets interesting. Brighton valued Baleba at a whopping £115 million last summer. Fast forward to now, and the Cameroonian could be available for as little as £65–69 million — a significant markdown driven by a dip in form this season.

His 2024/25 campaign was genuinely impressive. Baleba posted an 88% pass accuracy, averaged 6 duels and 2 tackles won, and contributed nearly 6 recoveries per game for the Seagulls. United’s interest made complete sense at the time.

Form Concerns Raise Questions

This season tells a different story. His pass accuracy has slipped to 86%, he’s managed just 21 league starts, and his defensive output has dropped sharply — just 3 duels won, 3 recoveries, and 1 tackle per game. He’s been a bench option under Fabian Hurzeler more often than not.

The Verdict

At just 22 years old, Baleba’s ceiling remains high. His recent struggles are a concern, but they could also be a product of unsettled speculation rather than a true decline. If United can land him at the reduced fee, it’s a calculated risk worth taking.
