Liverpool interested in Mateo Kovacic

Liverpool have reportedly “explored” the possibility of signing Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic ahead of next season.

According to a report by TalkSPORT via Fichajes, the Reds are considering the Croatia international as a potential transfer target for their midfield overhaul before next season.

The 28-year-old initially joined the Blues in the summer of 2018 on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy. His outstanding performances during his loan spell led the London outfit to trigger the €45 million buy option to sign him permanently.

Since then, Kovacic has become a crucial player for Chelsea, scoring 20 goals in 210 matches. He has been an integral part of the team ever since his arrival.

Despite Chelsea making several signings in the last two transfer windows, the Croatian remains a crucial player in their squad.

He racked up 26 appearances in all competitions this season, contributing three goals.

His contract with the Blues expires in 2024, but with just over a year left on his contract, the West Londoners may be forced to sell him.

Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Kovacic’s situation at Chelsea, although they face stiff competition for his signature. However, Kovacic’s style of play and defensive abilities make him an attractive option for the club manager Jurgen Klopp.

Chelsea are reluctant to part with Kovacic but may consider selling him if they receive an offer in the €40-50 million range.
