Newcastle United interested in Carlos Augusto

Newcastle United have recently expressed interest in Monza left-back Carlos Augusto, who has been delivering impressive performances this season.

As per reports from Tutto Mercato, the Magpies are among the several clubs keeping an eye on the talented defender.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe made an intriguing signing in January 2022 by bringing in Dan Burn from Brighton. Given Burn’s usual position as a centre-back and his physical presence, he seemed like an ideal candidate to fill the void left by the failed transfer of Sven Botman during that window. However, since the signing of the Dutchman in the following summer, many had assumed that Burn would remain a central option for the team.

On the other hand, the Magpies had acquired Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa and later made his signing permanent in the next transfer window. Surprisingly, Howe has converted Burn into a top-notch left-back since the beginning of the season, and he has performed exceptionally well, helping the team climb to Champions League positions. Despite Burn’s success in his new role and the potential of a new contract, Howe is keen to add another left-back option to the team.

Newcastle United’s pursuit of Kieran Tierney from Arsenal in the upcoming summer transfer window might prove challenging, given that they are a potential rival. Therefore, manager Howe is exploring other left-back options, with Antonee Robinson of Fulham and Alphonse Davies of Bayern Munich mentioned as potential targets. Another player on their radar is the 24-year-old Carlos Augusto, who has had an impressive season in Serie A.

The Brazilian is versatile and can play in several positions on the left side of the pitch, including as a winger or left-sided midfielder. However, he has excelled as a full-back and could be keen to continue his career in that position. He is also a regular contributor in the attacking third, with five goals and as many assists in 27 Serie A appearances this season. Given Newcastle’s desire to strengthen their attacking options, signing Augusto would be a valuable addition to the team.

Augusto’s contract with Monza is set to expire in 2024, which means that Newcastle United could potentially sign him for a reasonable fee. The player himself may also be open to the move, although Monza’s intentions to cash in or retain him for another year will ultimately determine his availability.
