Liverpool To Delay Virgil van Dijk Contract Talks Until 2027
Liverpool have no plans to open contract negotiations with Virgil van Dijk before the turn of the year, with the club instead choosing to monitor his form and fitness deep into the campaign before making a decision on his long-term future.
According to Football Insider, the Reds intend to wait until early 2027 before sitting down with the Dutch captain, whose current deal at Anfield runs until the summer of that year. Should no fresh terms be agreed, van Dijk would be free to negotiate with clubs abroad from January onwards, opening the door to a free transfer exit.
Same Waiting Game As Last Time
This cautious approach mirrors how Liverpool handled the 35-year-old’s previous renewal. Talks were shelved for months back in 2025 before an agreement was finally struck close to the end of that campaign, with Mohamed Salah signing a similar two-year extension around the same period after comparable uncertainty.
Under Andoni Iraola, van Dijk remains a first-choice fixture at the back and has started the new season strongly, ranking among the Premier League’s leaders for ground duels won and defensive recoveries. That form makes the club’s hesitancy notable, given his obvious influence on results.
Why Liverpool Are In No Rush
Liverpool’s reluctance likely stems from wanting flexibility. Committing to a player who will turn 36 before this contract even expires is a gamble, and with Ronald Araujo and other younger defenders already on the books, the club may prefer to assess how the squad shapes up before tying down an ageing centre-back to fresh terms.
Personally, I’d argue Liverpool are overthinking this one. Van Dijk’s leadership and consistency remain rare qualities, and letting speculation drag on risks unsettling both the player and the dressing room. A short, incentive-based extension now would remove any doubt without exposing the club to unnecessary long-term risk.
Van Dijk has made 378 appearances since joining from Southampton in 2018, scoring 52 goals and lifting two Premier League titles and the Champions League along the way.
