Liverpool Eye Stankovic Reunion As Midfield Plans Take Shape For 2027

Liverpool are reportedly ready to revisit their interest in Inter Milan midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic, having first explored a move during this summer’s negotiations over Curtis Jones, according to TEAMtalk.

While discussing Jones’ switch to the San Siro, Liverpool used the talks to check whether the highly-rated Stankovic might also have been obtainable, even though a new midfielder wasn’t considered essential to their plans. Jones eventually completed his move after Inter made repeated approaches, but Liverpool also probed the possibility of a deal running the other way.

Stankovic, son of Inter legend Dejan Stankovic, returned to the Nerazzurri this summer after a productive loan spell at Club Brugge, where he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 55 appearances during the 2025/26 campaign. Despite that form, opportunities have been scarce back in Milan, with the 21-year-old limited to just seven minutes across his sole Serie A outing so far.

Why Liverpool Could Return For Stankovic

Inter reportedly considered allowing Stankovic to leave again, with a loan including an obligation to buy among the options discussed, but Cristian Chivu ultimately persuaded the club to keep him after becoming convinced he could contribute to the first team.

Even so, Liverpool are said to be scouring the market for a holding midfielder capable of easing the defensive workload on Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister — a need that could grow given uncertainty over Mac Allister’s future amid renewed Real Madrid links.

In my view, Stankovic’s blend of physicality, passing range and defensive discipline makes him a sensible long-term target rather than a panic buy. Liverpool have shown patience here, gathering intelligence rather than rushing into a deal, and that groundwork could prove valuable if their midfield situation changes before the 2027 window opens.
