Manchester United and Bruno Fernandes Stuck in Contract Stand-Off Over Deal Length

Manchester United’s hopes of tying down captain Bruno Fernandes to fresh terms have hit a snag, with talks over a new contract reportedly reaching an impasse.

Talks Stall Over Length of New Deal

According to Sky Sports’ David Ornstein, discussions between United and their skipper remain ongoing but have yet to produce a breakthrough. The Portuguese midfielder, now 32, is keen on a longer-term commitment than the club appear willing to sanction at present. United’s offer reportedly centres on an initial three-year contract with a further year’s option, potentially running through to 2029, whereas Fernandes’ camp are pushing for greater long-term security beyond that. Wages also remain a sticking point, with his representatives said to be seeking a substantial improvement on his current terms. Crucially, United retain the option to extend his existing deal by 12 months regardless of how the wider negotiations unfold, which takes some of the urgency out of the situation from the club’s side.

Why United Can’t Afford to Get This Wrong

Letting this drag on feels like a risk United don’t really need to be taking. Fernandes was named Premier League Player of the Season last term after breaking the division’s single-campaign assist record, and he’s started this new season just as sharply, chipping in with goals and assists from midfield. Interest from Galatasaray and clubs in Saudi Arabia hasn’t gone away either, even if neither move materialised over the summer. Given how central he remains to Michael Carrick’s plans, and how openly Fernandes has spoken about wanting to finish his career at Old Trafford, this reads more like a hard-nosed negotiating stand-off than any genuine falling-out. Still, the longer it stretches into the campaign, the more it risks becoming a running distraction the dressing room could do without. United would be wise to find a compromise soon, rather than let speculation build with every passing matchday.
