Man Utd Eye Jarrad Branthwaite as Lisandro Martinez Replacement

Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move for Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, with Lisandro Martinez’s future at Old Trafford increasingly uncertain, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.

Martinez Contract Situation at Old Trafford

The Argentine’s deal runs until June 2027, and United are said to be reluctant to offer a long-term extension. Instead, they are expected to trigger a 12-month option, protecting their position and allowing time to arrange a sale in January or next summer.

Relations with the hierarchy have reportedly soured after Martinez’s public comments following the European defeat to Atletico Madrid, which led to an internal disciplinary sanction.

Why Branthwaite Fits Man Utd’s Defensive Plans

The 24-year-old is understood to be a priority target. He is left-footed, strong in the air, comfortable on the ball and able to cover at left-back. He has made over 100 appearances for Everton, including 92 in the Premier League, and his contract runs until 2030.

That long deal strengthens Everton’s hand, with a valuation of around £80 million reportedly being sought. United will monitor the situation before deciding whether to table an offer in the winter window.

Other Targets and Our Take

Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde has also been mentioned as a possible addition to rival or cover Luke Shaw.

In our opinion, £80 million feels steep for a defender with limited experience at the top level, and United may need to be patient. Much will depend on how the Martinez saga unfolds in the coming months.
