Man United lead race to sign Frenkie De Jong

Manchester United have got themselves in pole position in the race for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong ahead of next season, according to Football Insider.

The Red Devils have been pursuing the Dutchman for some time, with a failed attempt in the summer of 2022 due to the player’s preference to stay in Spain.

United head coach Erik ten Hag, who has previously worked with De Jong during their time at Ajax, is eager to have him join his team. De Jong was an integral part of Ten Hag’s team during their successful run in the Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, and the UEFA Champions League.

The 25-year-old midfielder has made a remarkable 172 appearances, contributing 34 goals in the process for the Catalan giants. He has been a crucial part of Xavi’s squad, featuring in 32 games across all competitions and missing just two La Liga fixtures. Despite having a contract with Barca until 2026 and expressing his desire to stay, the midfielder could be sold in the upcoming transfer window.

Barcelona are facing a severe financial crisis, leading to reports suggesting that they may sell the Dutch midfielder for around £70 million. Manchester United are willing to pay the price, provided they generate the funds by offloading some of their senior players.

Ten Hag has already achieved success at United since taking over in the summer, having won a trophy and being in contention for three more. However, he is eager to sign more players in the upcoming transfer window to strengthen his squad and compete for both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Although Manchester United face stiff competition from Chelsea, who are also interested in acquiring De Jong’s services. It remains to be seen whether Ten Hag can succeed in securing the midfielder’s signature for his team.
