Manchester United have registered their interest in Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell, according to Football Insider, with the Red Devils weighing up a move for the Englishman when his contract nears its final year.
Michael Carrick’s side strengthened their midfield significantly over the summer, bringing in Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba and Andrey Santos, yet left-back cover was left unresolved. Luke Shaw enjoyed a remarkably injury-free 2025/26 campaign, starting every league fixture despite his troubled fitness history, but this term he has already sat out three games, reviving old concerns.
Mitchell’s deal at Selhurst Park runs out next summer, and while Palace are pushing hard to tie him down to fresh terms, United are said to be watching closely, with a January approach not out of the question if talks stall.
Why Mitchell could represent an upgrade
Although Mitchell has operated more as a left wing-back for Palace in recent seasons, his underlying numbers stack up well against Shaw’s. Last season he averaged close to three tackles and five recoveries per Premier League outing, comfortably ahead of Shaw’s tally of two tackles, three recoveries and marginally fewer duels won.
At 27, Mitchell is entering the peak years of his career and carries a Transfermarkt valuation of £21.4million — a fee that looks increasingly reasonable given Palace’s precedent of losing Marc Guehi to Manchester City for just £20million amid a similar contract situation.
With Patrick Dorgu better suited to a wide attacking role than orthodox full-back duties, United’s need for defensive reinforcement down the left flank looks genuine rather than cosmetic.
Personally, I’d argue Mitchell’s Premier League pedigree and defensive output make him a shrewd, low-risk option, particularly if Palace’s stance softens closer to January. Shaw’s long-term future at Old Trafford may hinge on how this pursuit develops.
